Dietary Supplements Health Education Act (DSHEA, 1994)

This crucial legislation was passed after a long and difficult battle and represents a real health freedom triumph. Because of DSHEA, supplements are classed as foods, not drugs, so there are no upper limits on them and you can take as much as you or your doctor think your should.

This makes excellent sense medically because it is nearly impossible to overdose or do damage with natural nutrients: after all, your body has spent all of evolutionary history dealing with nutrients and has developed pathways to get rid of an over abundance. The same cannot be said for synthetic compounds and toxins: that is what makes them toxic since they poison enzyme systems and accumulate in the body. But nutrients are exquisitely safe, with a record that any pharmaceutical would be delighted to have, despite the recent spate of junk science "poisoned press" which stands reality on its head to make it seem that vitamins and minerals are bad for you and that drugs are the safe alternative!

For example, the FDA estimated that Vioxx alone was responsible for 139,000 heart attacks, strokes and deaths before it was pulled (and returned) to the market.

DSHEA is so important to health freedom, that it must be protected with tremendous vigour and orchestration. One of the primary objectives of HealthFreedomUSA.org is to protect DSHEA.
