Urgent!

Please use the form at the bottom of this page to email this letter to decision makers around the world and persons of influence with whom you have either a personal or a professional relationship and ask them to read the South African document which has been presented to the World Health Organization and the relevant Codex Committees.  This official document:

  1. Reminds Codex Alimentarius that it is mandated to implement the pro-nutrition Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Exercise and Nutrition  and
  2. Places eleven strongly pro-health agenda items on the dockets of the Codex Committees on Food Labeling (CCFL) and on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU).

Strong international support for this bid to shift the focus of Codex from one in which decisions are made for the benefit of corporate good to one in which those decisions serve the health needs of the world to succeed.

Therefore, it is vitally important that you urge everyone in your circle of influence who is, or is connected to, a decision maker in any country around the world to lend the voice of their country to the pro-health coalition forming around this ground-breaking initiative.

Please stress the time limits we are facing: CCFL meets in Ottawa, Canada May 1 – 5, 2006.

Thanks for your help.  This is a new game and we need all the players we can muster.  The rules?  Lift your voice for health and health freedom!

Yours in health and freedom,

The Letter

April 25, 2006

I am writing to ask you to put your influence and support behind very important pro-health agenda items recently introduced by South Africa, http://www.who.int/nutrition/FAOWHO_eforum_comments/en/index.html

This forward looking document:

1.  holds Codex to its mandate (reiterated by the WHO representative at the last CAC meeting [Rome, 2005]) to implement the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Exercise and Health (GSDPEH,  http://www.who.int/hpr/gs.process.document.shtml) for the prevention of non-communicable diseases of under nutrition and

2. has placed specific 11 pro-health items on the Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL) and Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU)  agendas.

South Africa’s initiative represents a significant step forward in adding a pro-health focus to the deliberations of Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL) and Codex Committee on Nutrition and Food for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU).  If Codex is to take a pro-health, rather than a pro-illness, stand on issues relating to nutrition and public health as mandated by WHO, it is urgently important that your country's voice be raised in support of this document both before and at these committee meetings. During the 2005 CAC (July, 2005, Rome, Italy) CCFL and CCNFSDU were directly tasked with implementing the World Health Organization's GSDPEN. Regrettably, CCNFSDU (November 21-25, 2005, Bonn Germany) used procedural manipulation to avoid doing so. The CCFL meeting (May 1-5, Ottawa, Canada) presents the next opportunity for this important pro-health focus to be brought forward.

At CCFL, South Africa will press for these agenda items.  Three levels of support are essential to move this initiative forward:

1. Written comments submitted by countries and NGOs supporting South Africa's comments and agenda items either

a. prior to the start of CCFL on May 1, 2006 or as
b. conference room documents during the CCFL meeting (May 1-6, 2006) and

2. Sustained verbal support from the floor of CCFL when South Africa’s item is presented

A strong statement like the following would be very helpful, especially when coupled with comments from the floor to make the same points and expand them via the CCFL proceedings:

"The implementation of WHO's Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Exercise and Health is within the mandate of Codex Alimentarius as confirmed at the Codex Alimentarius Commission (July, 2005, Rome Italy) and memorialized in the Report of that meeting.  We strongly support South Africa's comments on this issue presented in her comments (http://www.who.int/nutrition/comment_southafrica.pdf ) and further support the adoption of the agenda items contained within that document by CCFL, CCNFSDU and CAC in order to align the work of Codex Alimentarius with the health and well-being of the global population and of our constituent population as well."

The Natural Solutions Foundation will be present as an observer organization at both CCFL and CCNFSDU (and CAC in Geneva as well).  Perhaps you recall our discussion earlier this year of the Revised Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (RVMG) and the Model Legislation which enables it.  (Both are available to you at www.HealthFreedomUSA.org/download ).  A member of our distinguished legal team, Mr. Ralph Fucetola, will be present at CCFL to provide technical support and legal information to delegates on the ramifications and mechanism of the international trade protection provided by adoption of the RVMG and passage of appropriate legislation.  In addition, Mr. Fucetola and the rest of our delegation would be very pleased to have the opportunity to meet with those who represent you at CCFL in order to offer technical support on issues related to implementation of WHO GSDPEH and other health-related matters before CCFL.

One nation alone cannot, as you know, have a loud voice in the Codex dialogue. Many nations working together, however, especially those who understand the vital role that nutrition plays in both their health and their capacity to develop economically, have both a political and a moral force which may be of considerable significance. The Natural Solutions Foundation believes that this force is of major importance and should be heard literally, around the world.

Both the author of South Africa’s significant document, Antoinette Booyzen of the Ministry of Health, South Africa, booyza@health.gov.za , Mr. Fucetola, ralph.fucetola@usa.net , and I, would be very pleased to discuss this major health initiative with you or your representatives.
