Today, if we have any sense at all, will go down in history as
“The Day that GMOs Died”.
A paper published in the Food and Chemical Toxicology Journal on September 19, 2012, gives the world the information it has been waiting for: the results of a 2 year feeding study in which rats received diets consisting of Monsanto’s GMO corn (NK603), widely grown in the US and shipped around the world for animal feed and Roundup© (glyphosate), the world’s most popular herbicide.
What did they find? “Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and colleagues said rats fed on a diet containing NK603 – a seed variety made tolerant to dousing of Roundup© – or given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in the United States died earlier than those on a standard diet. The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers reported that 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group. Breast cancer in the rats fed the GMO corn and realistic Roundup© residue levels was present in 80% of the female rats. 8 out of 10!
Seralini’s paper is significant because it is the first EVER long term GMO feeding study. Ever. Previous studies lasted a maximum of 90 days although they have rarely been longer than 30 days. This important study showed that the effects of eating GMOs only begin to manifest themselves after 120 days in mammals. Bacteria are a bit simpler, however. Remember that our digestion and our immune function depend heavily on our gut bacteria. Then consider: Only one human GMO feeding study has ever been published.
Seven people consumed Roundup-Ready© soybeans (soybeans with herbicide-resistant genes inserted into them in order to survive being sprayed with otherwise deadly doses of Roundup herbicide). The bacteria of three of the seven showed that the inserted Roundup© resistant gene inserted into the soy transferred into their DNA. That inserted DNA continued to function in the gut bacteria long after the volunteers stopped eating the GMO soy!
The implications should be terrifying to you if you understand exactly how vital your intestinal DNA is to your health and well-being.
In the 2 year rat feeding study, the change was in the DNA of the rat itself. So the genetic changes that led to disastrous tumors, shortened life span and so on took some time to develop their impact were caused directly by the GMO corn they were fed. It is safe to assume that the damaged DNA accumulates over time, finally overwhelming the DNA repair mechanisms we are built with to correct for the small amount of genetic damage we might come across normally.
This study should scare you silly if you are still eating commercial food, and concern you deeply if you do not want your organic food contaminated – permanently – with dangerous genetically modified “PHUDE” genes.
If tumors, infertility, premature ageing and death, kidney and immune failure, auto immune problems and allergies can be induced through the damage to your genes GMOs and Roundup© cause, why are you eating them?
You see, rats are a lot like humans biologically so the results have great validity and they are not pretty.
Previous trials have either been too short to show impact (e.g., the 4 cow EU trial of GMO corn lasted only 8 weeks. All cows were alive at the end of the trial so the corn was deemed “safe”. Two of the cows died immediately after the trial. The EU verdict remained unchanged: “safe”) or they have been so underfunded that there was no possibility of conducting long term trials. (e.g., the wealthy biotech companies are not in the habit of funding studies that show the real dangers of their product!)
This study says it all: give mammals GMOs and they sicken and die prematurely and develop otherwise preventable disorders that kill them.
Right about now, if you are like me, you are thinking of all the people, young and old, in your life whom you have known who have, or have had, cancer. And you are making the correlation in your mind and the pit of your stomach. GMOs. Cancer. GMOs. Cancer. And it is expanding. GMOs. Infertility and the burgeoning of the invitro fertilization services across the US. GMOs. Lupus. GMOs Kidney Failure. GMOs. Foreign DNA in my baby’s cells. GMOs. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
