What Are We Fighting For?

There is a special term for those who cannot control what happens to their bodies. The word is “slave”. A land of men and women who cannot protect either their children or themselves from enforced dangers and who cannot make the health choices they value do not own their bodies. We are fighting an enemy bound and determined to take away our first freedom: our ownership of our bodies, expressed through our health freedom. Call the enemy tyranny, call it greed, call it Multinational Corporate Globalist Genocide. Call it what you like, it wants your body ill and it wants you subservient.

We are fighting an enemy which not only cares if you do not live or dies, but prefers that, after generating vast amounts of money through your suffering, you die promptly and with as little fuss as possible.

This enemy wants to take away your first, most precious, and most fundamental freedom: the freedom to All my life I have been eager to live in peace, and ready to fight to defend it. That is the way of the warrior and I am proud of my service to what I believed in over so many years when I defended my country. Now the way of the warrior is still my way, but, with you as my ally, we are fighting a far different enemy than the one that my soldiers and I have faced before.

This enemy is merciless and brutal, ready to leave us standing in place, but enslaved; working, but weak. The enemy is merciless, relentless greed (and worse) which wants us as sick as possible for as long as possible so that we are as profitable as possible. And then the enemy wants most of us dead.

The enemy is the New Feudalism, that terrifying system designed to replace our current economy and nation states with a depopulated hierarchy with a few pampered neo-aristocrats at the top of the heap with their servants and servitors around them to keep them comfortable and their technicians to keep their world humming. The rest of us, having served our purpose of generating unimaginable wealth, will have been disposed of through planned depopulation.

Does every one of their minions understand the ultimate goal? No, I think not. Has every one of the multinational corporate CEOs been read into the program? Again, I think not. Or the corrupt and dishonest government regulators? The greedy business men who put plastic in baby formula and chocolate bars? I think not.

But is the goal of weaponizing food to make us healthy and strong? I think not.

Is criminalizing 13 simple herbs and plants (like ginger, lemongrass and turmeric) used for millennia to control pests safely and cheaply in Thailand (but which compete with expensive and dangerous chemical preparations) designed to empower the farmer and keep him, his family, and his food’s consumers healthy? How about increasing the amount of insanely toxic materials we inject into babies and children, watching them deteriorate and die in record numbers and then branding those who use rational science to resist them “conspiracy theorists”? Is that designed to help the collective immune system or to destroy it? Is the fact that so far every case of whooping cough in New Jersey’s pertussis epidemic has been in a fully vaccinated child an isolated fluke? I think not.

The evidence is overwhelming, and the authorities make it clear (in the fine print) that vaccination does NOT prevent the disease being addressed. What they do not make clear is that vaccines irritate and stimulate the immune system, but its response does NOT convey immunity to the item injected, no matter how many irritants, adjuvants, toxins, metals, stray viruses and other horrors are injected along with it.

Is the fact that vaccines have never, no never, been proven safe OR effective, yet they are foisted upon us as if they were an accident? I think not.

Is it an accident that simple, effective, inexpensive and gentle cures, yes, cures, for cancer (like the ones that cured my potentially lethal prostate cancer 15 years ago and an unrelated paroted gland cancer 38 years ago) are ruthlessly and viciously suppressed while tragically ineffective, expensive and dangerous “treatments” for cancer are touted and trumpeted? I think not.

What are we fighting for? Freedom from slavery, pure and simple. Freedom or ourselves, our children and our right to be free men and women making our own health choices and exercising our basic, first freedom: health freedom.

When the slaves cannot produce for the masters, it is time to let them (us) just die…

You know that I am an MD who uses only natural means to help people feel better. So if you feel sick when your read about the threat to Medical Freedom of Choice hidden in the new “stimulus” bill, here is my Prescription for you and 10 neighbors: Combine:
2 very large dollops of freedom (Strain through an intact copy of the US Constitution)
5 Tablespoons of Constitutional Remedy created specifically for lawless indigestion
4 heaping scoops of informed outrage
2 cups full of common sense mixed with equal parts human dignity
A medium size pinch of historical perspective focused on prior, well defeated fascist thrusts
A dusting of inextinguishable humor (sardonic, ironic, gallows humor all work equally well)
Season to taste with inspirational sayings and tales of Founding Fathers, Mothers and Freedom Fighters

Preparation is Important!

Preparation is very important. You will need the right vessel to finish the brew so that its effects linger and become contagious:
In a crucible of pure Liberty Gold, transmuted from the oppression-era dross of lies and slavery, rapidly stir ingredients. Light a fire of truth under them and heat until they refuse to be quenched by the water of deceit. Try this several times. When the mixture is strong enough, the waters of disinformation, deceit and distortion will simply roll off to the side of the mixture and boil off.

When the potion begins to bubble, turn up the heat and wait a short time. You will note the sweet smell of personal liberty which is now rising from the information-rich bubbles forming in the freedom-brew.

If you are using a modern gigabyte system, you will have a chord available. If not, get any nearby 11 year old to program an old one for you. Using the chord supplied, plug the crucible into the internet. Exercise caution while using the long, insulated wire supplied because the packets of information will be hot and make the liberty infusion even hotter. Oddly, no matter how hot it gets, liberty information will not burn the consumer although it may make them uncomfortable at first when the truth gets out. With familiarity and increased rational though, however, people who sample it become very fond of its taste and effect and will go to great lengths to obtain and share more liberty information.

Note: this will act as a toxic brew when it comes into contact with fascists, even if they are wearing white coats.

Once brewed, the mixture has several curious properties:

Liberty Information will not, however, kill Avian Flu or other weaponized organisms. Nano silver will, however, do exactly that without harming the beneficial bacteria of the body and can be obtained much more simply, and with less preparation than Liberty Information. We in the US still enjoy access to them, but the FDA is gearing up to bring us into “HARMonziation” with the Codex Vitamin and Mineral Guideline just like Europe where the European Food Supplements Directive will make advanced health through high potency, varied nutritional supplements a criminal activity.

Natural treatments of all sorts are being seriously restricted there and the EU’s 27 countries met secretly not long ago to force GMO “franken foods” on a strongly unwilling population despite laws and objections. It’s a case of “follow the money – and you’ll find the genocidalists along with the bankers!” But Europe is waking up and Dr. Rima and I are making this trip to help that happen. We’ll keep you posted, of course.

It’s pretty ho-hum no-news that the FDA is failing miserably at every aspect of its mandate.

~Mercury in high fructose corn syrup (which is usually made from genetically modified “Franken Corn” ~MSG, a known neurological and pancreatic poison (of the excitotoxin class) in vaccines, kids food (and adults food, too) ~Melamine OK in baby’s formulas and the general food supply despite the fact that it can be lethal to babies and there was no safe level until the FDA unscientifically declared that there was ~Irradiated just-about-everything-including-salad-greens ~Antibiotics so widely used that antibiotic resistant (“flesh eating” staph shows up in pork and other foods, industrially genetically modified plants growing next to natural ones and contaminating them forever, ~Salmonella laced peanut butter ~Down graded organic foods to make Big Agribiz as happy as Big Pharma ~Conflicts of interest so blatant that the government no longer tries to deal wth them, ~Cattle producers forbidden to test their cattle for “mad cow” disease because they might find it, ~Sweeteners that can cause blindness, MS and brain damage, ~Acrylamide in snack foods, ~Dangerous unlabeled GMOs passed off as “equivalent” so consumers won’t ask, don’t know, ~Veterinary drugs and pesticides permitted in food despite known hazards, ~Viruses sprayed on foods, ~Cloned meat and milk, and on and on and on.

Thanks to the FDA, the “Fraud and Death Agency”, and the USDA, the “” agency, the US diet is not life sustaining: it is disease and death inducing. Our diet, thanks to these agencies, is literally killing us. Why? Because the regulators work for, and owe their allegiance – and their financial well-being, to the regulated industries.

Enough!

Congressional report after Congressional report, Hearing after Hearing makes it clear that the agencies charged with protecting our food can no more do that than the EPA can clean up and protect our environment. Again and again Congress affirms that the agencies have failed and then “solves” the problem by acting like the lunatic who, unsuccessful at a problem, does the same thing again, making the problem worse, not better.

Enough!

Congress take note: throwing money at the FDA and USDA and giving them more authority does not solve the problem. We have 80 years of proof that this strategy just makes things worse.

Enough!

Yes, the only answer is to take food regulatory authority away from these death dealing agencies and give it back to the States where popular pressure and control is far more meaningful. How to do that? By the same kind of pressure that made Congress do a 180º reversal of direction in 1994. Instead of voting to ban all nutrients (are you noticing a pattern here?) they responded to the millions of letters from Americans from all walks of life and passed legislation treating nutrients as foods which, as such, should not be regulated as if they were drugs. That legislation is called the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and public pressure in its favor is the ONLY reason that we have access to dietary supplements at all.

The lesson is clear. It is public pressure, like the 2×4 the apocryphal farmer used to get the mule’s attention, which drives enlightened public policy, NOT politicians and certainly not the lobbyists they routinely bow to.

The FDA does a poor enough job “regulating” dangerous and deadly drugs. There is no way an agency so pervasively corrupt and inept can change its ways and suddenly become the custodian of health and healthy foods when those very foods are the chief economic competitor of the drugs whose approval supplies the lion’s share of the operating budget of the FDA through “Users Fees”. The conflict of interest is so monumental that it fairly takes your breath away.

Enough!

Drugs are not the very core of life. Food is.

The multiple ways Monsanto is putting normal seeds out of reach

People say if farmers don’t want problems from Monsanto, just don’t
buy their GMO seeds.

Not so simple. Where are farmers supposed to get normal seed these
days? How are they supposed to avoid contamination of their fields
from GM-crops? How are they supposed to stop Monsanto detectives from trespassing or Monsanto from using helicopters to fly over spying on them?

Monsanto contaminates the fields, trespasses onto the land taking
samples and if they find any GMO plants growing there (or say they
have), they then sue, saying they own the crop. It’s a way to make
money since farmers can’t fight back and court and they settle because they have no choice.

And they have done and are doing a bucket load of things to keep
farmers and everyone else from having any access at all to buying,
collecting, and saving of NORMAL seeds.

1. They’ve bought up the seed companies across the Midwest.

2. They’ve written Monsanto seed laws and gotten legislators to put
them through, that make cleaning, collecting and storing of seeds so
onerous in terms of fees and paperwork and testing and tracking every
variety and being subject to fines, that having normal seed becomes
almost impossible (an NAIS approach to wiping out normal seeds). Does your state have such a seed law? Before they existed, farmers just collected the seeds and put them in sacks in the shed and used them the next year, sharing whatever they wished with friends and
neighbors, selling some if they wanted. That’s been killed.

In Illinois which has such a seed law, Madigan, the Speaker of the
House, his staff is Monsanto lobbyists.

3. Monsanto is pushing anti-democracy laws (Vilsack’s brainchild,
actually) that remove community’ control over their own counties so
farmers and citizens can’t block the planting of GMO crops even if
they can contaminate other crops. So if you don’t want a GM-crop that grows industrial chemicals or drugs or a rice growing with human DNA in it, in your area and mixing with your crops, tough luck.

Check the map of just where the Monsanto/Vilsack laws are and see if
your state is still a democracy or is Monsanto’s. A farmer in Illinois
told me he heard that Bush had pushed through some regulation that
made this true in every state. People need to check on that.

4. For sure there are Monsanto regulations buried in the FDA right now
that make a farmer’s seed cleaning equipment illegal (another way to
leave nothing but GM-seeds) because it’s now considered a “source of
seed contamination.” Farmer can still seed clean but the equipment now has to be certified and a farmer said it would require a million to a
million and half dollar building and equipment … for EACH line of
seed. Seed storage facilities are also listed (another million?) and
harvesting and transport equipment. And manure. Something that can
contaminate seed. Notice that chemical fertilizers and pesticides are
not mentioned.

You could eat manure and be okay (a little grossed out but okay). Try
that with pesticides and fertilizers. Indian farmers have. Their top
choice for how to commit suicide to escape the debt they have been
left in is to drink Monsanto pesticides.

5. Monsanto is picking off seed cleaners across the Midwest. In Pilot
Grove, Missouri , in Indiana (Maurice Parr ), and now in southern
Illinois (Steve Hixon). And they are using US marshals and state
troopers and county police to show up in three cars to serve the poor
farmers who had used Hixon as their seed cleaner, telling them that he
or their neighbors turned them in, so across that 6 county areas, no
one talking to neighbors and people are living in fear and those
farming communities are falling apart from the suspicion Monsanto
sowed. Hixon’s office got broken into and he thinks someone put a
GPS tracking device on his equipment and that’s how Monsanto found
between 200-400 customers in very scattered and remote areas, and
threatened them all and destroyed his business within 2 days.

So, after demanding that seed cleaners somehow be able to tell one
seed from another (or be sued to kingdom come) or corrupting
legislatures to put in laws about labeling of seeds that are so
onerous no one can cope with them, what is Monsanto’s attitude about labeling their own stuff? You guessed it – they’re out there pushing laws against ANY labeling of their own GM-food and animals and of any exports to other countries. Why?

We know and they know why.

As Norman Braksick, the president of Asgrow Seed Co. (now owned by
Monsanto) predicted in the Kansas City Star (3/7/94) seven years ago, “If you put a label on a genetically engineered food, you might as
well put a skull and crossbones on it.”

And they’ve sued dairy farmers for telling the truth about their milk
being rBGH-free, though rBGH is associated with an increased risk of
breast, colon and prostate cancers.

I just heard that some seed dealers urge farmers to buy the seed under the seed dealer’s name, telling the farmers it helps the dealer get a discount on seed to buy a lot under their own name. Then Monsanto sues the poor farmer for buying their seed without a contract and extorts huge sums from them.

Here’s a youtube video that is worth your time. Vandana Shiva is one
of the leading anti-Monsanto people in the world. In this video, she
says (and this video is old), Monsanto had sued 1500 farmers whose
fields had simply been contaminated by GM-crops. Listen to all the
ways Monsanto goes after farmers.

Do you know the story of Gandhi in India and how the British had salt
laws that taxed salt? The British claimed it as theirs. Gandhi had
what was called a Salt Satyagraha, in which people were asked to break the laws and march to the sea and collect the salt without paying the British. A kind of Boston tea party, I guess.

Thousands of people marched 240 miles to the ocean where the British
were waiting. As people moved forward to collect the salt, the British
soldiers clubbed them but the people kept coming. The non-violent
protest exposed the British behavior which was so revolting to the
world that it helped end British control in India.

Vandana Shiva has started a Seed Satyagraha – nonviolent
non-cooperation around seed laws – has gotten millions of farmers to
sign a pledge to break those laws.

American farmers and cattlemen might appreciate what Gandhi fought for and what Shiva is bringing back and how much it is about what we are all so angry about – loss of basic freedoms.

The Seed Satyagraha is the name for the nonviolent, noncooperative
movement that Dr. Shiva has organized to stand against seed
monopolies. According to Dr. Shiva, the name was inspired by Gandhi’s
famous walk to the Dandi Beach, where he picked up salt and said,

“You can’t monopolize this which we need for life.” But it’s not just the
noncooperation aspect of the movement that is influenced by Gandhi.
The creative side saving seeds, trading seeds, farming without
corporate dependence-–without their chemicals, without their seed.

“All this is talked about in the language that Gandhi left us as a
legacy. We work with three key concepts.”

“(One) Swadeshi…which means the capacity to do your own
thing–produce your own food, produce your own goods….”

“(Two) Swaraj–to govern yourself. And we fight on three
fronts-–water, food, and seed. JalSwaraj is water independence–water freedom and water sovereignty. Anna Swaraj is food freedom, food sovereignty. And Bija Swaraj is seed freedom and seed sovereignty. Swa means self–that which rises from the self and is very, very much a deep notion of freedom.

“I believe that these concepts, which are deep, deep, deep in Indian
civilization, Gandhi resurrected them to fight for freedom. They are
very important for today’s world because so far what we’ve had is
centralized state rule, giving way now to centralized corporate
control, and we need a third alternate. That third alternate is, in
part, citizens being able to tell their state, ‘This is what your
function is. This is what your obligations are,’ and being able to
have their states act on corporations to say, ‘This is something you
cannot do.'”

“(Three) Satyagraha, non-cooperation, basically saying, ‘We will do
our thing and any law that tries to say that (our freedom) is illegal…
we will have to not cooperate with it. We will defend our freedoms to
have access to water, access to seed, access to food, access to
medicine.'”

An Administration of Change? Where?
FDA Acts to Attack Health Freedom – Again, and Worse!
PYRIDOXAMINE: THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR DSHEA?

Before discussing the Vitamin B-6 ban, let’s briefly review FDA’s policies and initiatives that threaten health freedom and why DSHEA (the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act – 1994) is so important to your health freedom and why it is so much of a threat to the FDA.

DSHEA says that supplements and herbs are to be considered as food. Because they are food, there can be no limitation on dose, leaving the door open for the high potency supplements we enjoy so uniquely in the United States. Protected supplments, etc., are defined as those items available for sale and use in dietary supplements before June, 1994 (when DSHEA went into effect). The list of grandfathered substances was complied by the NNFA (now NPA) and accepted by the FDA. It defines the DSHEA protected substances and has been a core of health freedom as it pertains to supplements in the US since the law was passed.

The FDA is now unilaterally denying the fact that the list protects substances and acting to continue and accelerate the process of destroying access to high potency supplements upon which so much of our Natural Health options rest. Here’s the process the FDA is following:

First, in 2007, Congress rewards FDA for its failures by increasing its power. This was done through Sen. Kennedy’s FDA “enabling act” although our vigorous efforts (thank you!) did get the “DSHEA product savings clause” 1011 added to the bill. This important clause specifically exempts all DSHEA products from any provision in the bill.

Second, in 2008, FDA askes for public comments on how the “DSHEA product savings clause” applies to section 301(11) of the act which gives FDA authority to ban foods that are being studied for use as “treatment of disease.” The simple legal answer, of course, is that the section in question has no relationship whatsoever to DSHEA products since the entire law has no impact on DSHEA products.

We of course submitted our comments objecting to this evisceration of DSHEA and tens of thousands of Natural Solutions Foundation’s Mighty Mouse Warriors did likewise…

Third, a prior “Citizens Petition” from a pharmaceutical company is used by FDA as the excuse to ban a specific form of B6 (Pyridoxamine), negating the critically important 1994 NNFA Grandfather List of Dietary Ingredients for DSHEA is introduced. This opens all supplements to similar bans.

Fourth, comments are sought on the idea that FDA can ban any nutritional product it likes from interstate commerce despite legislative protection through the specific legislative prohibition preventing the FDA from doing so for products covered under DSHEA…

Again, our valient Mouse Warriors took the challenge and clicked in large numbers to tell the FDA that we value both the rule of law and the protections of this bill for DSHEA products.

Fifth, , in Europe, the EFSD meets to discuss maximum permitted levels (MPLs) of nutrients …

Sixth, based on another one of those “citizens petitions” from favored “consumer” groups, EPA expresses its intention to ban topical nano silver despite the fact that it has already been approved as an efffective, inexpenisve and higly effective surface cleaner…

Seventh, FDA seeks to eliminate all nutrients and objects from health use which have had any study about them published of any sort whatsoever – this is the ultimate import of the dangerous section 301(11) of the act.

Eigth, FDA/CODEX seeks to eliminate all nutrients which have not had met an artificial “Significant Scientific Agreement” standard that violates DSHEA’s commercially reasonable standard of “competent and reliable scientific evidence.”

And the beat(ing) goes on…

But back to Pyridoxamine. FDA’s “response” as noted above, to the position that DSHEA protects dietary supplements from the unfair tactic of some pharmaceutical company conducting a “study” of the ingredient for medical use and then using that to ban the competing natural substance, was to throw down the gauntlet at the feet of the industry and ban a legal, grandfathered nutritional supplement ingredient…

It’s our opinion that what we – health freedom advocates, industry and the consumers of the United States, together need to protect access to high potency supplements. It is also our opinion that we must engage in a concerted campaign to Divest the FDA (and the USDA) of Food Regulatory Authority. Congress has, at least three times before, divested FDA of authority it was misusing or failing to exercise well enough, when DEA, EPA and CPA were created.
How much more FDA mis-regulation can consumers and the industry survive? How much more FDA-mis-regulation will consumers tolerate? Are we ready to act?

So there we have it: either the FDA is divested of food authority or we will, bit by bit, then larger bit by larger bit, lose our access to high potency, advanced nutrition.

I’ve posted another detailed example of why the FDA must be divested of its food authority before its mismanagement causes even more harm on our Health Freedom Blog ( http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/?p=1961 ). The Federal Government’s obscene “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy regarding GMO (genetically modified organisms) “food” creates the conditions for a mega-disaster of unimaginable severity.

Plant Based Vaccines Under Development World Wide

Once genetic material migrates from a modified plant or animal into other plants, animals, insect, or what have you, that migration is permanent except for one thing: the DNA is not stable so it literally “jumps around” causing novel proteins to be expressed.

Read that as “infertility”, “sterility”, “cancers”, “auto-immune diseases”, “Joint and connective tissue diseases”, “neurological diseases”, “fetal death”, “failure to thrive”, “infant mortality”, etc. Babies in utero are particularly susceptible to the impact of these “novel proteins”, but no one is immune.

Plant Based Vaccines Under Development World Wide

Now ask yourself what happens if vaccine-producing plants (or industrial-product producing plants – the issue is identical) mingle their pollen with the plants that produce your food and the food of the animals of this planet. The USDA has reduced the already close-to-non-existent controls on industrial plant growth next to, and contaminating, food plants. For example, for 5 years Bayer’s Crop Science vaccine rice was growing next to, and contaminating, food rice in Louisiana. Bayer knew about it (perhaps the USDA did, too – we do not have that information) and said nothing.

When the contamination was discovered, Bayer was not fined or sanctioned by the US Government and the contaminated rice was simply sold to the US Military for its troops in Iraq (!!!). US Military labs detected the contamination and the rice was then sold to sub Saharan African countries like Ghana. There, in every rice market that was tested, the contaminated rice was found. Poor people, buying their daily food, were eating poisoned rice, courtesy of the Biotech Industry, Bayer Crop Science (from Beyer, the same corporation that knowingly sold HIV contaminated blood fractions in Europe when they could not sell them in the US) and the US Government. But if you are buying food, especially prepared food, in the US, you are in exactly the same position: poisoned “food”, lacking any notification or labeling of that poisonous status, is being sold to you as if it were wholesome and fit for human consumption because of the total failure of the US Government to protect your health or the integrity of the food supply from commercial – and worse – interests.

The Natural Solutions Foundation has created the International Decade of Nutrition, www.NaturalSolutionsFoundation.org, to reclaim the production of food. The US Government is on the other side: industry interests and conflicts of interest make the US Government, according to all assessments, including the US Congress’ most recent report on the subject, totally unable to resist industry pressure and totally unwilling to clean house in order to become a health promoting system. Indeed, FDA scientists have openly appealed to President Obama for help in allowing them to do their job: being science to the regulation of safety.

Reformation after reformation, new agency after new agency, staff shuffle after staff shuffle have failed to weaken industry and strengthen either science or sense in the government regulation of food. ENOUGH! Our lives and our children’s lives are at stake. The Natural Solutions Foundation is once again leading the way by identifying the problem and providing the natural solutions: the system is broken beyond repair. No amount of patchwork will repair it. It is time for the failed US Government to relinquish its failed mission of food safety and regulation to the smaller governmental units which are closer to the will of the people: State governments.

Remembering that NO science of safety is PERMITTED for genetically modified “foods” in the US, remembering that patents on GMOs are based on outdated and invalid scientific premises, remember that the US Supreme Court was packed beforehand in order to grant patent rights to Monsanto, and remembering that well over 80% of the US population would prefer not to eat GMO “food” although more than 90% of the American food stock is contaminated with GMO “food”, the following article should arouse a strong response.

The stunning disregard for science and safety shown by the US Government at the behest of the food-related industries is almost too large to take in at one gulp. Biotech “foods”, approved by the FDA, USDA and Codex, as they are, represent a major threat to health, indeed, to life on this planet.

None of the agencies tasked with responsiblity for food safety and food regulation in the United States are either capable or willing to provide meaningful safety or health-based regulation. After deadly decades, it has become clear that they cannot be reformed and that
1. The USDA must be dissolved
2. The FDA must have its food regulatory responsibility removed from it as environmental protection, consumer safety and narcotics and dangerous drug responsibility was removed from it to create separate government agencies
3. Another federal agency will not protect food and the health of the American people since conflict of interest and corruption run too deep.
4. Regulatory responsibility for food must be turned over to the States, consistent with their Constitutional mandates and rights so that the impact of the people, from whom regulatory authority comes, is far closer to the exercise of regulatory authority.

Worldwide team set to develop plant-based livestock vaccines

Norwich based scientists are heading up an international collaboration that aims to develop plant-based vaccines for some of the most devastating diseases to afflict the world’s livestock.

Avian flu, foot and mouth disease and blue tongue are just some of the diseases targeted under the EU-funded project, led by Prof George Lomonossoff of the John Innes Centre (JIC) in Norfolk and backed by further participation from teams in Russia and South Africa.

Using a new system that lowers the time required to conduct the experiments from months to weeks, plants will be stimulated into producing specific proteins, which can subsequently be assessed for their value as vaccines.

It is the time taken for production of these proteins that has been accelerated, which means that large-scale screening for candidate vaccines is now within reach.

The partners say they have now shown that plant-based vaccines production and assessment is possible, and safe.

Professor Konstantin Skryabin, coordinator of the Russian laboratories for the PLAPROVA (Plant Produced Vaccines) project, said the development of new techniques for expression of vaccine proteins in plants is a very important topic for Russia.

He said: “Russian scientists have already obtained promising results and international collaboration in this field will contribute to the success of plant-based systems.”

PLAPROVA will utilise transient expression techniques to temporarily stimulate plants into over-producing proteins, which can subsequently be assessed for their value as vaccines.

Though plants have been used to produce pharmaceuticals in this way before, technical constraints have prevented their value from being fully realised.

The group say a few candidates with proven vaccine ability have been produced and, although these proteins are effective at preventing disease, they have limited commercial use as they are in competition with existing conventional products. They have, however, shown that plant-based vaccines production and assessment is possible and safe.

Initially, the consortium will concentrate on diseases of importance to farming in both the EU and Russia, which includes avian influenza, blue tongue, foot and mouth disease and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome.

Proteins identified through this screening programme will be developed for large-scale production and ultimately low-cost production of effective vaccines.

Overall project coordinator Prof Lomonossoff, said: “The consortium brings together the leading laboratories from the EU, Russia and South Africa working to produce useful proteins from plants, and this international cooperation is central to the success of the project in battling diseases that affect us all.”
