A leading zoologist has found evidence that genes used to modify crops can jump the species barrier and cause bacteria to mutate,
prompting fears that GM technology could pose serious health risks.

A four-year study by Professor Hans-Hinrich Kaatz, a respected German zoologist, found that the alien gene used to modify oilseed rape had transferred to bacteria living inside the guts of honey bees.

The research – which has yet to be published and has not been reviewed by fellow scientists – is highly significant because it suggests that all types of bacteria could become contaminated by genes used in genetically modified technology, including those that live inside the human digestive system.
If this happened, it could have an impact on the bacteria’s vital role in helping the human body fight disease, aid digestion and facilitate blood clotting.

Agriculture Minister Nick Brown, who was yesterday advising farmers who have accidentally grown contaminated GM oilseed rape in Britain to rip up their crops, confirmed the potential significance of Kaatz’s research. He said: ‘If this is true, then it would be very
serious.’

The 47-year-old Kaatz has been reluctant to talk about his research until it has been published in a scientific journal, because he fears
a backlash from the scientific community similar to that faced by Dr Arpad Pustzai, who claimed that genetically modified potatoes damaged the stomach lining of rats. Pustzai was sacked and had his work discredited.

But in his first newspaper interview, Kaatz told The Observer: ‘It is true, I have found the herbicide-resistant genes in the rapeseed
transferred across to the bacteria and yeast inside the intestines of young bees. This happened rarely, but it did happen.’

Although Kaatz realised the potential ‘significance’ of his findings, he said he ‘was not surprised’ at the results. Asked if this had
implications for the bacteria inside the human gut, he said: ‘Maybe, but I am not an expert on this.’

Dr Mae-Wan Ho, geneticist at Open University and a critic of GM technology, has no doubts about the dangers. She said: ‘These
findings are very worrying and provide the first real evidence of what many have feared. Everybody is keen to exploit GM technology,
but nobody is looking at the risk of horizontal gene transfer.

‘We are playing about with genetic structures that existed for millions of years and the experiment is running out of control.’

One of the biggest concerns is if the anti-biotic resistant gene used in some GM crops crossed over to bacteria. ‘If this happened it would leave us unable to treat major illnesses like meningitis and E coli.’

Kaatz, who works at the respected Institute for Bee Research at the University of Jena in Germany, built nets in a field planted with
genetically modified rapeseed produced by AgrEvo. He let the bees fly freely within the net. At the beehives, he installed pollen traps in order to sample the pollen from the bees’ hind legs when entering the hive.

This pollen was fed to young honey bees in the laboratory. Pollen is the natural diet of young bees, which need a high protein diet. Kaatz then extracted the intestine of the young bees and discovered that the gene from the GM rape-seed had been transferred in the bee gut to the microbes.

Professor Robert Pickard, director-general of the Institute of the British Nutrition Foundation, is a bee expert as well as being a
biologist and has visited the institute where Kaatz works. He said: ‘There is no doubt that, if Kaatz’s research is substantiated, then
it poses very interesting questions and will need to be looked at very closely.

‘But it must be remembered that the human body has been coping perfectly well with strange DNA for millions of years. And we also
know many people have been eating GM products for years without showing any signs of ill health.’

Cottonseed Genetically Modified to Be Edible for Humans

WASHINGTON – Cotton, for thousands of years one of the most important crops for clothing and shelter, might also become a source of food.

A chemical called gossypol makes cottonseed inedible for humans, though some of it is used in feed for cattle, which are less affected by the toxin.

Researchers at Texas A&M University have now genetically modified cotton to produce seeds with little or no gossypol.

It’s a step they say could help provide valuable protein to millions of people. Their findings are reported in Tuesday’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Keerti Rathore of the university’s Institute for Plant Genomics and Biotechnology said the modified plants continue to have gossypol in their stems and leaves where it helps resist insects, but the chemical is significantly reduced in the seed.

Worldwide, 44 million tons of cottonseed is produced annually. It is grown in 80 countries and the seeds are 23 percent protein, Rathore said.

They are pressed for oil, and in the United States about half of the remaining meal goes into animal feed, he explained.

But, with the gossypol removed, the meal can be ground into flour and used in cooking, he said.

Rathore said he hasn’t tasted the cottonseed meal, but added that researchers who had bred a different gossypol-free cottonseed had, and reported that tasted good.

Unfortunately, he said, that earlier version removed gossypol from all parts of the plant, which was then attacked by a variety of insects.

Jodi Scheffler, a research geneticist at the Agriculture Department’s Agricultural Research Service center in Stoneville, Miss., said the development has potential.

“It definitely gives us new hope,” said Scheffler, who was not part of Rathore’s research team.

“This is an age-old problem,” she explained, the protein contained in cottonseed is good, but cannot be used by people or most animals because it contains this toxin.

The potential problems that have to be worked out, she said, are determining whether the genetic change is stable through generations, and overcoming regulatory and public acceptance problems that can face any genetically modified foods.

One of the reasons it is important is for regions such as West Africa, where many small farmers grow cotton as a cash crop and would like to be able to use the seed to feed themselves and their livestock, she added.

Rathore’s research was funded by the Texas Cotton Biotechnology Initiative, Cotton Inc., and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

Nanotechnology a ‘bigger concern’ than GM foods

The lifting of bans on genetically modified crops has revived the debate about the safety of the food we eat.

But the next step in industrial food production has got Australia’s food regulator bracing itself for even more controversy.

Opponents to nanotechnology say it is a much scarier prospect than GM food, and while it can make food look better and last longer, there are fears about how it might affect the human body.

The regulator now faces the difficulty of ruling when packaging becomes part of the food.

The CEO of Food Standards Australia New Zealand, Steve McCutcheon, says it is called interactive packaging, where the food takes in chemicals from the packet as it sits on the shelf.

“At the moment, the shelf life of prepacked salad vegetables is fairly short, but with the application of this technology we understand that you could actually package fresh salads, and they would be fresh still after the 30-day period on the shelf,” he said.

The development that has given birth to the one-month fresh salad is called nanotechnology – working with particles thousands of times smaller that the width of a human hair.

It is not only for packaging, some companies want to use nanoparticles as ingredients in the food itself.

“We understand that a company in the United States has applied for a patent to cover the use of titanium dioxide and silicone dioxide in chocolate, in nanoparticle form, to give the surface a gloss,” he said.

“At this stage we’re aware of applications to use this technology in the marketplace, but whether that’s actually happening or not, I don’t know.”

Mr McCutcheon says the new form of technology would require pre-market approval prior to entering the market in Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Rye Senjen is researching nanotechnology for Friends of the Earth.

She says it could already be in some food we eat, and it is a bigger concern than genetically modified organisms.

“I think it’s genetically engineering on steroids, because nanotechnology has a much bigger application that will be applied to every single aspect of the food chain. It’s much more scary,” she said.

Although nanotech food has not been approved, Dr Senjen says there is no law to prevent manufacturers using their regular ingredients in nanoparticle form.

“There’s no legal requirement whatsoever to tell the regulator that now you’ve shrunk the particle size. It’s not in the regulations. You don’t even have to mention it,” she added.

She says nanoparticles are dangerous because they are small and could breach the body’s defences in ways no natural food can.

“When you ingest something and then if it can cross from the digestive system to elsewhere, well it can go anywhere,” she said.

But Mr McCutcheon believes it is too early to say there are risks.

“We don’t know yet what the hazards and risks are from its application to food, if indeed there are any hazards or risks,” he added.

Mr McCutcheon says the regulator is only just beginning to look at the global evidence on the impact of eating nanoparticles.

GM Foods: New study shows unborn babies could be harmed

Mortality rate for new-born rats six times higher when mother was fed on a diet of modified soya

Women who eat Genetically Modified foods while pregnant risk endangering their unborn babies, startling new research suggests.

The study – carried out by a leading scientist at the Russian Academy of Sciences – found that more than half of the offspring of rats fed on modified soya died in the first three weeks of life, six times as many as those born to mothers with normal diets. Six times as many were also severely underweight.

The research – which is being prepared for publication – is just one of a clutch of recent studies that are reviving fears that GM food damages human health. Italian research has found that modified soya affected the liver and pancreas of mice. Australia had to abandon a decade-long attempt to develop modified peas when an official study found they caused lung damage.

And last May this newspaper revealed a secret report by the biotech giant Monsanto, which showed that rats fed a diet rich in GM corn had smaller kidneys and higher blood cell counts, suggesting possible damage to their immune systems, than those that ate a similar conventional one.

The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation held a workshop on the safety of genetically modified foods at its Rome headquarters late last year. The workshop was addressed by scientists whose research had raised concerns about health dangers. But the World Trade Organisation is expected next month to support a bid by the Bush administration to force European countries to accept GM foods.

The Russian research threatens to have an explosive effect on already hostile public opinion. Carried out by Dr Irina Ermakova at the Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it is believed to be the first to look at the effects of GM food on the unborn.

The scientist added flour from a GM soya bean – produced by Monsanto to be resistant to its pesticide, Roundup – to the food of female rats, starting two weeks before they conceived, continuing through pregnancy, birth and nursing. Others were given non-GM soyaand a third group was given no soya at all.

She found that 36 per cent of the young of the rats fed the modified soya were severely underweight, compared to 6 per cent of the offspring of the other groups. More alarmingly, a staggering 55.6 per cent of those born to mothers on the GM diet perished within three weeks of birth, compared to 9 per cent of the offspring of those fed normal soya, and 6.8 per cent of the young of those given no soya at all.

“The morphology and biochemical structures of rats are very similar to those of humans, and this makes the results very disturbing” said Dr Ermakova. “They point to a risk for mothers and their babies.”

Environmentalists say that – while the results are preliminary – they are potentially so serious that they must be followed up. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has asked the US National Institute of Health to sponsor an immediate, independent follow-up.

The Monsanto soya is widely eaten by Americans. There is little of it, or any GM crop, in British foods though it is imported to feed animals farmed for meat.

Tony Coombes, director of corporate affairs for Monsanto UK, said: “The overwhelming weight of evidence from published, peer-reviewed, independently conducted scientific studies demonstrates that Roundup Ready soy can be safely consumed by rats, as well as all other animal species studied.”

What the experiment found

Russian scientists added flour made from a GM soya to the diet of female rats two weeks before mating them, and continued feeding it to them during pregnancy, birth and nursing. Others were give non-GM soya or none at all. Six times as many of the offspring of those fed the modified soya were severely underweight compared to those born to the rats given normal diets. Within three weeks, 55.6 per cent of the young of the mothers given the modified soya died, against 9 per cent of the offspring of those fed the conventional soya.

Genetically engineered crops contain latent pesticides that are activated when eaten by consumers

According to a recent article from the Institute for Responsible Technology, certain varieties of herbicides used on genetically modified (GM) crops — though inactive inside the plants they protect — can be re-activated after consumption and cause toxic reactions.

Herbicide tolerance (HT) is a common trait in roughly 71 percent of all GM crops, which are mostly comprised of corn, soy, cotton and canola. HT crops tend to make a lot of money for biotech companies, since farmers who buy HT seeds are required to purchase that company’s brand of herbicide as well.

The herbicide used in many GE crops is derived from a natural antibiotic found in soil, which produces specialized enzymes that transform from an antibiotic to a non-toxic form called NAG (N-acetyl-L-glufosinate). The enzymes are then inserted into the DNA of GM crops, so that when the crop is sprayed with herbicides, the plant transforms the herbicide into non-toxic NAG — essentially, the plant is able to protect itself from the toxic chemicals that kill the weeds surrounding it.

However, recent animal studies have shown that after GM crops — which have accumulated high levels of NAG after several herbicide sprays — are consumed, stomach bacteria can re-transform NAG back into the toxic herbicide. Two rat studies found a 10 percent and a 1 percent rate of NAG conversion after consumption of HT crops.

According to a January 2006 report by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of the Inspector General, certain pesticides easily enter the brains of young children and fetuses, where they then destroy cells. Studies of mice embryos exposed to glufosinate resulted in reduced numbers of vital brain receptors, growth retardation, increased death rates and incomplete development of the forebrain.

Critics of GM crops urge the public to call on the EPA for more rigorous testing of genetically engineered crops, and for stricter labeling laws on GM products so consumers can more easily avoid them.
